Know the Different Types of Injectable Fillers

When you look in the mirror, do you wish you could turn back the hands of time?

You will age, but you may want to do so more gracefully. Injectable fillers eliminate the appearance of fine lines and fill in furrows and folds. If you’re unwilling to undergo a surgical procedure but want to pursue a more youthful you, the following injectables may be perfect for you.

Juvéderm

Juvéderm’s key ingredient is the natural sugar hyaluronic acid. This acid binds to water to plump up skin. There are two types of Juvéderm: Juvéderm XC minimizes wrinkles around the mouth and nose, and Juvéderm Voluma XC enhances volume around the cheeks. Juvéderm is a popular filler because research shows it also boosts your skin’s production of collagen and elastin. The effects of Juvéderm XC last up to a year, and Juvéderm Voluma XC up to two years.

Restylane

The Restylane family of fillers includes Restylane, Restylane-L, Restylane Silk, Perlane and Perlane-L. All are variations of the key ingredient — hyaluronic acid.

Depending on what facial area you wish to target (forehead, frown lines, temples, brows, laugh lines, cheeks, lips, jawline or chin) your doctor will select the appropriate formulation. When patients receive an initial injection and two follow-ups (at 4.5 or nine months, then 18 months), studies show Restylane’s benefits can last up to three years.

Teosyal

Manufactured in Switzerland, this monophasic hyaluronic acid-based filler is formulated to closely mimic the natural hyaluronic acid present in skin. Its wrinkle-filling, volumizing effects last between 12 and 18 months. Teosyal’s manufacturer, Teoxane, claims its product “respects your facial expressiveness.” The Teosyal PureSense product line includes lidocaine to make the injection process more comfortable.

MicroFat Grafting

This filler is different because it’s entirely natural — it’s your own fat. A physician uses a small syringe to harvest fat cells from your stomach, buttocks, thighs or other areas of your body with excess fat. The fat is transferred to other syringes and then injected deep into the skin to restore volume and fullness, or shape and frame areas of your face. MicroFat grafting can be used in all areas of the face, including cheeks, brows, chin, nasal labial folds and lips.
