Eyelid surgery, (also known as blepharoplasty), is a procedure to remove excessi skin, muscle and excess fat from the upper and lower eyelids. Lower eyelid surgery will correct sagging skin, puffiness (“bags”) in the lower eye and upper eyelid surgery will restore the youthful-looking of droopy upper eyelids.

Typically, blepharoplasty surgery (eyelid lift) is indicated for people with baggy, puffy lower lids, and loose, excess skin on the upper lid.

What is a good age for Blepharoplasty?

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 91% of blepharoplasty patients are in their late 40s. People of this age might have never considered plastic surgery but they don’t want to look tired anymore, they want the mirror to reflect their true emotional state and considering eyelid lift. Less commonly people in their 20s and 30s might also choose to have eyelid surgery if their eyelids are naturally very hooded.

Blepharoplasty Procedure  

Our plastic surgeon, Dr. Dickie will make an incision along the natural line of the upper eyelid crease and immediately below the lower lashes of the lower lid. Excessive skin, fat and muscle may be removed. Occasionally, Dr. Dickie will perform your eyelid surgery with a specialized carbon dioxide laser, thus minimizing external scars.

Recovery From Blepharoplasty

Following the eyelid lift surgery, the eyelid will feel tight and tender as the local anaesthesia wears off. Bruising and swelling is temporary and will take approximately 10 days to return to normal. Dr. Dickie will give you eye drops which act as both a topical antibiotic and steroid. Sutures will be removed approximately one week post-operatively.

How long does a blepharoplasty last?

Experts estimate that the results of lower and upper eyelid surgery last between 10-15 years. As you continue to age some retouching may be necessary, but most people who undergo blepharoplasty once will never have to do it again if they choose the appropriate qualified surgeon.
