Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)

Nose Correction Surgery (Rhinoplasty) in Barrie, Ontario

Your nose is the central, most prominent facial feature. When your nose is out of proportion with other facial features, affecting the facial harmony, it can affect self-image and confidence.

Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a “nose job,” is a surgical procedure aimed at reshaping or resizing the nose for cosmetic or functional purposes. Nose enhancement is among the most common of all plastic surgery procedures. Rhynoplasty surgeries can be performed on any part of the nose:

  • to increase or reduce its size,
  • to modify the size and shape of the nostrils,
  • to change the projection of the nasal tip or bridge of the nose,
  • to alter the slope or angle of the nose and correct deviated septum.

Rhinoplasty procedure may also be performed to correct an injury or birth defect, or to improve breathing. In some cases, nose enhancements can be obtained with a non-surgical nose job, which is a dermal filler precedure.

Who is a candidate for Rhinoplasty Surgery?

Candidates for rhinoplasty surgery typically include individuals who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their nose and have realistic expectations about what the procedure can achieve. A nasal surgery can have many purposes – both cosmetic and functional. It can address structural issues like a prominent dorsal hump or a crooked nose, as well as make subtle modifications to enhance the size or shape of your nose.

Dr. Kenneth Dickie, board-certified plastic surgeon in Ontario, will review your medical history and carefully evaluate your nose, nasal shape and facial features and discuss your goals for improvement. Cosmetic rhinoplasty can improve your nose if you require alteration or reshaping of the nasal bridge, reducing the shape or width of the nose, reshaping the nasal tip, reducing the width or the size of the nostrils, or adjusting the angle between the nose and upper lip. Patients who have had a nose injury/accident or have obstructed nasal airways are also considered good candidates for surgery (functional rhinoplasty).

How is Rhinoplasty (Cosmetic Nose Surgery) Performed

At the Royal Centre of Plastic Surgery Dr. Dickie performs rhinoplasty or nose job under local or general anaesthesia in his fully accredited in-office surgical facility in Barrie (one-hour drive from Toronto). This facial plastic surgery can either be performed using a closed procedure where incisions are hidden inside the nose, or an open procedure where an incision is made around the nostril and columella (the narrow strip of tissue that separates the nostrils). Through either of these incisions, the soft tissue that covers the nose is raised allowing access to reshape the nose structure.

Recovery Time After the Nose Job

After your nose surgery you may experience some discomfort, but this can be alleviated with a cold compress and prescribed pain medication. You may experience some swelling, bruising and headaches. Dr. Dickie will advise you to keep your head elevated until the initial swelling subsides. You will be discharged with a nose splint and nasal packing to support your nose. These must remain in place until your follow-up visit with your facial plastic surgeon. Rhinoplasty patients may be required to wear the nose splint for approximately one week. Packing is typically removed within two to seven days, depending on the extent of your cosmetic surgery. You can usually return to work or non-strenuous activities as soon as you feel comfortable to do so. Strenuous activities may be resumed within a few weeks following the surgical procedure.
