You’ve stood in front of the mirror for countless hours and visualized yourself with larger, perkier, or just different breasts. You’re ready for your new body. But do you really know what to expect from breast augmentation surgery?
Cosmetic surgery is a complicated matter with the very highest stakes: you!
You should know exactly what to expect before and after the procedure. Read on to understand the ins and outs of breast augmentation surgery and how to get the perfect set of breasts you’ve always wanted.
#1. The consultation
Before you go anywhere near the operating table, you will meet with your surgeon to discuss your wants and needs. You will undergo a thorough medical check-up where the surgeon will measure your body and make recommendations on the best way to proceed.
If you are a suitable candidate, you will need to make some choices: silicone or saline? Round breast implants or shaped? Smooth or textured? Where to make the initial incision and where to insert the implants? Your surgeon will guide you in making the best choices for your situation.

#2. Before the operation
Before your scheduled operation, you will be led to a pre-surgery area where you can relax and address any final questions or concerns. Your surgeon will take pre-surgery photos and mark your breasts.
An anesthetist will give you general anesthesia through the insertion of an intravenous (IV) line. Don’t worry! There’s absolutely no pain or discomfort from here on out—you’ll simply fall into a deep sleep, completely unaware of your surroundings. Further anesthesia is maintained throughout the surgery by a facial mask.
#3. The operation
Once you are asleep, your chest is cleaned, sterilized, and anesthetized. The surgeon will then make a small incision to create a space in the breast pocket. This space is further sterilized before a breast implant is carefully inserted as per your specifications, with the surgeon observing for any asymmetry or complications.
Once the implants have been perfectly placed, the cuts are sutured and bandaged and you will be dressed in a surgical bra. The anesthesia will be switched off and you will awake, good as new, and the surgery is over.
#4. Post-surgery care
You may be given medication to accelerate the healing and prevent infection. After the initial recovery period of the first couple of days, you will most likely experience soreness and swelling for a few weeks. This is completely normal and expected!
You will need to schedule further visits with your surgeon to ensure that your scars are healing nicely, your implants are settling in correctly, and that you have the precise set of breasts that you’ve always wanted.
