The main candidates for breast augmentation are: women with underdeveloped breasts; women, who had more breast tissue at one point in their life, but developed and women with sagging breasts through weight loss, pregnancy or aging.

If a woman would be able to breastfeed with implants, YES, is the answer. Various studies have shown that breast feeding can be an issue for small breasted women. It is likely that implants will not have an effect either way. Regardless of the type of implant used, there is no known risk to the infant.

Factors such age due to the loss of elasticity, weight loss, or even the weight of the implant can cause the breast to relax and can cause sagging. However, though the breast implants can add some weight to the breasts, the surrounding scar tissue can provide some support for the tissue in the breast.

A breast lift can be performed surgically if a woman with or without implants feels that her breasts have sagged. If there is excessive sagging, then it may be performed at the same time as an augmentation.

The FDA and thousands of accredited researchers have approved silicone gel implants and saline filled implants for breast augmentation.

The failure rate of a saline filled implant and silicone filled implant is the same. This stands true only if the saline implants are filled to their optimum value. Saline implants, filled below the optimal suggested value, may experience excessive rippling and will consequently not last as long as the silicone filled implant.

When saline filled implants are filled beyond the manufacturer’s so-called maximum volume, the breast will appear the same as a silicone filled implant. However, some women prefer the very natural feel to the touch of a silicone implant.

Dr. Dickie will discuss your desired implant size, not by comparing yourself to your friends, who will most likely have a different body type than you, but by a thorough discussion of your expectations and desired look. In your discussion with Dr. Dickie, you will be deciding upon the desired bra size. Your band number won’t change with a breast augmentation surgery, only your cup size. Dr. Dickie will take measurements of your breast, in particular, the diameter of the base of the breast. This will determine the amount of CCs that your chest wall is able to accommodate.

In general, the degree of wrinkling or rippling can become more apparent in the patient if the patient is thin with a thinner fatty layer in the breast, a smaller pre operative breast size or whether the implant is saline or silicone. Factors that will help to decrease apparent rippling would be if the patient has a thicker fatty layer, larger pre operative, silicone rather than saline filled and smooth surfaced implants.

Prior to the breast augmentation surgery, Dr. Dickie will ask you to refrain completely from taking any medication containing an anti inflammatory agent. For safety reasons, herbal medication should be discontinued two weeks prior to surgery.

If you are thinking of having children, it’s important to know that implants can interfere with your ability to breastfeed. Another consideration is if you have a family history of health problems, such as auto-immune diseases, you might not want to risk putting a foreign substance in the body. It has also been shown that breast implants make it more difficult to detect breast cancers with a mammogram (mammograms may also cause implants to rupture, especially if the technician is not familiar with implants) so someone with a family history of breast cancer should be aware of this. Myth 1: Breast Implants Look Artificial

Grace Gold, journalist and author of The Boob Job Bible, writes that “even my good friends and family didn’t know I had a breast augmentation” because she had been fooling everyone for years with push-up bras. So what’s the key to a breast augmentation that looks fabulous and real? Choose a plastic surgeon skilled in the procedure, and opt for a natural size increase (no more than two to three cup sizes depending on your frame) that will increase your confidence without looking unnatural.

Myth 2: Breast Implants Feel Artificial

While breast implants may never feel exactly like the real thing, they are extremely close – just ask your surgeon to place a sample implant in your hand. Rock-hard implants that don’t move are a result of scar tissue buildup known as capsular contraction. Linda Swanson, MD notes that there are things that can be done to reduce the risk of scar tissue, including opting for saline rather than silicone implants, placing them under the muscle, and performing special exercises to maintain softness.

Myth 3: Silicone Implants Are Dangerous and Cause Cancer

Whether filled with silicone gel or saline, breast implants have been extensively tested and are approved for use by Health Canada. There is absolutely no evidence that they cause cancer or any other diseases.

Myth 4: Breast Implants Interfere with Breastfeeding

Inform your surgeon that you wish to breastfeed in the future, and he or she will ensure that your incisions do not interfere with the milk-producing ducts (if the implant placement is underneath the muscle, the incisions will be nowhere near this tissue).

Myth 5: You Can’t Do Strenuous Physical Activity Once You Get Implants

Absolutely untrue. While you will need to take a few weeks off strenuous activities and heavy lifting in the post-operative recovery period, you will soon be able to resume all your previous sports and activities – from bungee jumping to yoga, tubing, and mountain climbing.

Myth 6: Breast Implant Needs to Be Replaced Every 10 Years

Well, if you opt for breast augmentation surgery, chances are you will need to replace the implants at some point in the future, as they do not have a lifetime warranty. But implants only need to be replaced if a problem occurs. Many women find their implants are still going strong 10, 20, and even more years after the initial surgery.
