Many of us worry about whether our beauty routine is helping or hurting us. Every generation creates new rumours and theories to fight aging, and there is so much conflicting information out there that it can be hard to figure out which advice to take. To make these decisions a little easier, we’ve compiled this list of 4 common beauty myths:
1. Your hair gets used to your shampoo, and the shampoo will become less effective.
According to Marie Claire magazine, this perception is probably based more on psychological effects and product build-up. The psychological aspect refers to the fact that using the same shampoo has the same results every time, so when we change shampoos, the new response can make your new shampoo seem better. Meanwhile, a build-up of old product can make your regular shampoo seem lackluster.
2. Drinking lots of water will reduce wrinkles
According to the BBC, this is unfortunately not true. While dehydration reduces skin turgor, “a measure of how fast it takes the skin to return to normal if you pinch some skin and lift it up”, there’s no evidence that drinking extra water will result in smoother skin over time. Water is still good for you, though, so don’t stop hydrating!
3. Shaving will make your hair grow back thicker
Women’s Health magazine clears this one up: “the hair just appears shorter and a bit more stubbly, making it seem thicker than it really is in between shaves.” The absence of that tapered end to a hair follicle that hasn’t been cut is what makes your new growth seem thicker.
4. Cocoa butter or olive oil can stop stretch marks
Unfortunately, this isn’t true. According to Real Simple, stretch marks occur deeper down than either product can reach and are caused by genetics or expanding skin.
We hope that debunking these myths will help some of you refine your beauty routine. If the truth about some of these myths–especially about stretch marks!–is disappointing, there are still things you can do. Topical creams may help. Laser therapy is also an option–one that we at the Royal Centre for Plastic Surgery offer, courtesy of Dr. Kenneth Dickie.
