Did you know that there have been 20 million injections of Restylane® since it was approved by the FDA 20 years ago? It’s quickly become the go-to procedure for women looking to add volume to their lips. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recently reported that over 27,000 lip procedures were done in the United States last year, up 43 percent since 2000.
It’s clearly one of the most popular treatments on the market. But what, exactly, are Restylane injections and how do they work?
Restylane Injections: The Straight Facts
Restylane is a crystal-clear gel injected into the skin in order to lift the area. It is similar to the body’s own hyaluronic acid (HA), which absorbs water to give you the appearance of more volume. Injecting Restylane into specific areas, such as the lips or into a wrinkle, will fill in the site resulting in more volume and a healthy, vital appearance.
Unlike permanent implants, Restylane will dissolve over time. The molecules break down and are eliminated without leaving any trace in your body. It’s perfectly safe as hyaluronic acid is present in all living organisms.
Are There any Side Effects?
Common side effects include some swelling in the injected area as well as redness, bruising, tenderness, itching, or very mild pain.
You don’t need any sort of pain medication or local anesthetic when receiving this treatment, and you can be in and out of the clinic in as little as an hour. Some of our patients are able to have their procedure done over their lunch hour.
We do recommend you avoid prolonged sun exposure or physical exercise for the first 24 hours after the procedure.
Should I Get Restylane Injections?
You’re a good candidate for this procedure if you’re dealing with:
- Lines or wrinkles around the mouth and nose
- Crow’s feet around the eyes
- Nasolabial lines, AKA laugh lines
- Hollow cheeks
- Thinning lips
If you’re concerned about animal rights, you should know that Restylane is not extracted from animals, unlike some of the other of biodegradable implants on the market today.
