Scrolling through images of models or celebrities online, you’ve probably seen the current trend toward pillowy, full lips. It’s a youthful, fresh look and one that is attainable through lip injections.
But perhaps you don’t want that kind of fullness. Instead, you may want to counteract some of the effects of aging such as fine lines around the mouth, a downward tug on the corners of the mouth or even thinness in the lips. Lip fillers can also reverse these effects in a way that looks natural and boosts your confidence.
What Are Lip Injections?
Different brands of lip fillers are available. Most lip fillers contain hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a substance found naturally in the body that helps keep moisture in tissues. When the lip area is injected with lip filler, the skin becomes fuller and small lines or wrinkles smooth out. The lip filler can also help reshape the lips and make them firmer.
One of the brands of lip filler we use at the Royal Centre of Plastic Surgery is Teosyal® Kiss. This lip filler is specially formulated for the sensitive and delicate skin around the mouth. The mouth is very mobile and has a dense network of blood vessels, so it requires a unique gel formula that can work in this area.
Another product we use is Juvéderm®, which also is effective at filling in fine lines to give skin a smoother, more youthful appearance.
Because hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body, it is slowly reabsorbed. Depending on your body’s metabolism and the overall look you want to achieve, the lip filler can last six to twelve months. To maintain the appearance of fuller lips, the procedure can be done again as the filler decreases.
The Lip Injection Procedure & Recovery
To enhance the mouth’s appearance, fine needles are used to inject the filler directly into the skin of the targeted areas. Sometimes the surgeon will gently massage the area to help the filler move into place. The procedure generally takes 15 – 30 minutes and the effects are instantly noticeable.
Are Lip Fillers Painful?
Lip injections can be mildly uncomfortable, but if the person administering the treatment is an experienced professional, you won’t be in pain. Lip injections are a relatively simple procedure. But that dense network of blood vessels in the lips means the person performing the procedure must have the proper medical training and experience.
What should I expect after the lip injection procedure?
After a lip injection, you may experience some redness, swelling and bruising around the injection areas. These effects should diminish within a few days. Following the procedure, most patients can resume their regular routines the same day. It is recommended to avoid strenuous exercise, sun exposure and extreme temperatures for at least 24 hours after receiving lip filler.
At the Royal Centre of Plastic Surgery, each patient first meets with Dr. Kenneth Dickie for a consultation and facial analysis. The best procedures and options available to you are discussed as well as the types of outcomes you can expect. Your medical history is also reviewed before any procedure is performed.
How long do lip fillers last?
Because your body absorbs the filler over time, they last about 6 month to a year.
